Mekong 2010 Itinerary

30 Oct Arrive Jinghong
Arrive in Jinghong. Jinghong is the gateway to Xishuangbanna, Southern Yunnan and there are flights available from Kunming or Bangkok. We recommend flying from Bangkok.
Local guide will meet you on arrival and transfer to the hotel. Visit to the Xishuangbanna Nature Reserve is available for those arriving latest 2 pm. Overnight at the Golden Zone Hotel (only dinner included)

31 Oct Jinghong – Guanlei
Morning visit Ganlanba Morning Market and the Dai water village. Ganlanba is located in the lower reaches of the Lancang River (the local name for the Mekong). In the afternoon, board our chartered boat to begin our downstream journey on the river. First stop is the small town of Guanlei.
Overnight Custom Hotel, best available in Guanlei. (all meals included)

01 Nov Guanlei – Chiangsaen
After breakfast, continue downriver. The Mekong takes us past the beautiful tropical rainforest scenery of the ‘Golden Triangle’. Myanmar is on the right side of the river and Laos is on the left, but we stay on board and land in Thailand at the town of Chiangsaen. We will be met at the jetty and transferred to the luxurious Anantara Golden Triangle resort for the night. (all meals)

02 Nov Chiangsaen – Houixay
Check-out this morning and visit the Opium Museum, filled with reminders of the region’s notorious past as the world’s top opium producer. After lunch, continue drive to Chiang Khong, where we will clear Thai immigration formalities and take one of the local boats across the river to the town of Houixay, on the Laos side. Afternoon free at this bustling border trading town. Overnight Houixay guesthouse. (all meals included)

03 Nov Houixay – Pakbeng
This morning we continue in our Laos boat down the Mekong River. Enroute, stop at Ban Houeilampen, a Hmong minority village, and then later on the shore for a picnic lunch. Continue downriver to the town of Pakbeng for dinner and overnight stay. Overnight Pakbeng Lodge. (all meals)

04 Nov Pakbeng – Luangprabang
Visit the local market in the morning, then continue the boat trip to Luangprabang. On the way we stop at the limestone cliffs of Pak U, and visit the caves there filled with thousands of Buddha figurines placed there since the 16th century. Arrive at Luangprabang jetty in the late afternoon, and transfer to your hotel. Overnight Le Bel Aire Hotel (breakfast & lunch only)

05 Nov Luangprabang
Full day in Luangprabang. If you rise early enough, join the visit into the town center, where the hundreds of Buddhist monks living in the city will be lined up for the morning alms offering. Morning city tour of Luangprabang, an UNESCO World Heritage, visiting the former Royal Temples. After lunch you can climb Mt Phusi for a view over the city, and take part in a Baci ceremony.
Overnight Le Bel Aire Hotel. (breakfast & lunch).

6 Nov Departure
