We’re back from the Silk Road in China!
Tracing the Source of Silk from Kashgar to Xi’an (10–20 April 2009)
Our readers had another action-packed adventure with PASSPORT this April. The team started from Ürümqi, the capital of Xinjiang province – the Muslim heartland of China where the people look very different from the rest of the Chinese. We almost got run over by donkey carts at Kashgar’s happening Sunday Market, walked on ice at the breathtaking Karakul Lake, and tasted the some of the world’s sweetest raisins at Turpan.
In the days that followed we headed east to the source of silk. We relived the old caravanserai on the back of a camel at the Mingsha Dunes, visited the westernmost fortress of the Great Wall at Jiayuguan, and stood in awe in awe at the Xi’an terracotta warriors, the guardians of the afterlife to China’s first emperor.
Along the way we had a great time with the locals, and our shutterbugs had a field day with all the amazing scenery, people and culture that one can only experience along the ancient Silk Road.
